The Andromeda Galaxy, also Andromeda Nebula or Great Andromeda Nebula, and sometimes also Andromeda Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy. It is listed as M31 in the Messier catalog and NGC224 in the New General Catalog. In the starry sky it stands in the constellation Andromeda, after which it is named. On clear nights, the Andromeda Galaxy can be seen from a dark spot with the naked eye. It is the most remote object that can be seen regularly with the naked eye.

The Andromeda Galaxy is about 2.5 million light years away from the solar system. It has a halo diameter of about one million light years. This makes it the largest member of the local group. The Andromeda Galaxy has a total mass of about 800 billion solar masses. They and the Milky Way are the two most massive galaxies of the local group.

The diameter of the visible disk is about 140,000 light years. The Milky Way has a diameter of about 100,000 light years. The next smaller companion of the local group, M33 (or triangle fog), has a diameter of about 50,000 light years. M31 contains about 1⋅1012 stars, while the Milky Way contains about 1⋅1011 stars.
